How to Get Rid of Ants in your Reno, Nevada Home

Kill off the Trail

The first step to getting rid of ants in your home is killing the ants already present and cleaning the trail they follow to find food. The best way to do this is to wipe away the ants with a sponge or rag soaked in soapy water, perhaps mixed with bleach. This will kill the ants and clean away the chemical trail they use to find their way.

Block their Entrance

Once the ant trails have been eliminating, you can stop more ants from finding their way in by sealing any cracks and using deterrent solutions at doorways and openings. Seal cracks around windows and cable outlets using cauck. You can also spay a vinegar solution or sprinkle talc or salt around doorways.

Eliminate the Source

If ants keep finding their way into your home, you may want to consider eliminating the colony. There are two basic approaches to this — poison and brute force. Most people with want to try poison first. You can create your own bait by mixing water, sugar and boric acid. Boric acid can be found in many household cleaners and is extremly toxic to ants. Simply place samples of this mixture near ant trails and mound and wait for the foregers to take the bait back to their colony.

If poison does not do the trick, you might need to take more direct action. The fastest way to eliminate an ant colony is to drench the mound repeatedly with several gallons of boiling water. You will need several gallons to ensure that you reach the queen and eggs buried deep in the mound. This is a drastic step that should be taken if no other solution works and ants can be a benificial presence to the ecosystem of the yard or garden by killing more insidious pests.

Prevent Future Infestations

Once ants have been eliminated from your Reno home, you want to take steps to prevent future infestations. The best way to do this is to regularly clean the home, especially any place food is prepared or eaten. You want to wipe down counter tops daily and wash dishes after every meal, or at least once a day. Regularly taking out the trash can also help.
